Declaration for the Rediscovery of Primary Care Physicians and the Humanization of Health Systems

April 24, 2026

We, citizens from diverse cultures, traditions, beliefs, and social contexts, affirm that all men and women have the right to dignified, accessible, readily available, and high-quality healthcare. This right must guarantee not only the treatment of illness, but also the comprehensive care of the person throughout their entire life. We believe this objective can be fully achieved only when health systems place the human relationship between doctor and patient at the center, incorporating fundamental pillars such as prevention, quality-based care, and attention to professional burnout. In this regard, the primary care or family physician plays an irreplaceable role as the first point of access to the healthcare system and as a guide throughout the care process.

The family physician is not merely a professional who diagnoses and treats diseases. Above all, they are a close companion who understands the person within their vital, family, and social context. This relationship of trust, built over time, allows for more personalized, effective, and respectful care.

Likewise, their work is essential to promoting a preventive approach to health. Through continuous monitoring, health education, and early detection, the family physician helps prevent disease progression and encourages healthier lifestyles, benefiting both individuals and society as a whole.

In an increasingly complex healthcare system, the family physician also fulfills a key coordinating role, guiding patients across different specialties and services and ensuring coherent and integrated care. In this way, they not only improve the quality of care but also promote more efficient use of resources.

We recognize that the doctor-patient relationship constitutes the core of truly humane healthcare. When this relationship weakens—whether due to excessive workload, bureaucratization, or lack of recognition—the system risks becoming impersonal, focused solely on disease rather than on the person.

Therefore, we affirm the urgent need to rediscover and strengthen the role of the family physician as an essential element for the humanization of our societies. Their closeness, commitment, and vocation for service make them a trusted reference, especially in moments of greatest vulnerability.

We also recognize that every person possesses an intrinsic dignity that must be respected and protected at all times. This dignity is expressed concretely in the care received, in attentive listening, in respect for personal history, and in the careful consideration of each patient. The family physician, by virtue of their proximity and continuity, is in a privileged position to make this dignity visible in everyday practice.

We value the role of families and communities as fundamental spaces of care and support, and we recognize in the family physician a key ally in strengthening these bonds, contributing to a more supportive and cohesive society.

At the same time, we express our concern about the conditions under which many family physicians practice: excessive patient loads, lack of resources, insufficient recognition, and working conditions that hinder the full development of their vocation. These situations affect not only professionals but also the quality of care patients receive.

For all these reasons, through the “Thank You, Doctor!” campaign, we wish to express our deepest recognition and gratitude to those who, through their vocation and daily commitment, sustain the most human pillar of the healthcare system. Their work transcends clinical practice, becoming an essential service to individuals, communities, and the common good, and reminding us that medicine, in its essence, is an act of humanity.

We invite public institutions, policymakers, and all social actors to place the doctor-patient relationship once again at the center, to strengthen family medicine, and to guarantee dignified conditions that allow these professionals to carry out their work with excellence.

We firmly believe that a healthcare system centered on the family physician is a more humane, closer, and fairer system, capable of responding to people’s real needs and of building a future based on care, responsibility, and solidarity.

Patient associations and healthcare professionals from around the world, including the nonprofit organization SOMOS Community Care, the Dr. Ramon Tallaj Foundation, and other civil society entities, with the support of the Pontifical Academy for Life, make an urgent call to all social and political actors to join efforts and once again place the doctor-patient relationship at the center of our health systems, particularly through proper recognition of the role of the family physician. This action is essential to guarantee close, humane, and high-quality care for all people.
