ROME, NOVEMBER 6. On Thursday, November 16, the Vatican will witness the launch of the first global campaign to advocate for the role of the primary care physician or family doctor.
The initiative, under the slogan “Thank You, Doctor!” (Thankyoudoctor.org), addressing a concern repeatedly expressed by Pope Francis, aims to respond to the healthcare system crisis in many countries, where primary care physicians have suffered from a lack of support and professional recognition, seriously endangering the doctor-patient relationship.
The campaign is an initiative of the nonprofit association of physicians SOMOS Community Care, which brings together more than 2,200 doctors in New York, particularly serving immigrant patients, and has the support of the Pontifical Academy for Life, as well as other medical institutions, nurses, and civic and academic organizations.
At the presentation event, which will take place in the Benedict XVI Hall of the Pontifical Teutonic College in the Vatican, Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, president of the Pontifical Academy for Life; Monsignor Renzo Pegoraro, chancellor of the same Vatican institution; Dr. Ramon Tallaj, president of the SOMOS Community Care association; Dr. Mario Paredes, CEO; and Dr. Filippo Anelli, president of the National Federation of Italian Doctors will participate.
The event will also feature representatives from the Catholic Doctors Association, nursing associations, as well as representatives from health institutions, hospitals, and medical schools.
Declaration for the Rediscovery of the Family Doctor
At the press conference, the “Rediscover the Family Doctor” Declaration will be presented, which seeks to remind governments, public institutions, and health systems of the need to re-center the figure of the primary care physician.
The event will kick off the first global campaign of endorsements from institutions worldwide and citizens recognizing the irreplaceable role doctors play around the world, sometimes under heroic circumstances.
It is necessary to confirm participation in the press conference before November 14, indicating the name, surname, media, or institution represented, by sending a message to email@example.com.
