Dr. Ramón Tallaj Highlights the Central Role of the Patient in Human-Centered Medicine at Diario Salud Meet 2026 at UNIBE

Santo Domingo, 2026 – As part of the Diario Salud Meet 2026 event, under the theme Learn, Connect, Showcase, Inspire: The patient as the protagonist of the healthcare model, Dr. Ramón Tallaj, President of SOMOS Community Care, delivered an inspiring talk on the relationship between the family physician and the patient, emphasizing its irreplaceable and deeply human nature.

During his presentation, Dr. Tallaj stressed that the family physician is not simply a provider of medical services, but a comprehensive companion who understands each patient’s history, family, and individual needs. He highlighted that, although artificial intelligence and other technological innovations can improve efficiency and diagnostic accuracy, they can never replace active listening, empathy, and the trust built through the human relationship between doctor and patient.

Dr. Tallaj shared his personal and professional journey, from his childhood in the Dominican Republic—marked by limited resources and difficult experiences—to the creation of SOMOS Community Care in New York, a network of more than 2,500 physicians dedicated to providing high-quality primary care to vulnerable communities. He emphasized that, even within large and complex systems, personalized care and close relationships remain the foundation of effective medicine.

He also underscored the importance of social determinants of health, prevention, community education, and the comprehensive management of chronic diseases, as well as the protection of healthcare professionals’ well-being. He noted that physicians who maintain close relationships with their patients experience lower levels of burnout and a stronger sense of purpose.

Dr. Tallaj concluded by reaffirming a key message for the new generation of physicians: technology must serve the human relationship, but the most powerful tool will always be the ability to listen, understand, and accompany patients.

The Diario Salud Meet 2026 event is thus established as a space for reflection, learning, and connection for healthcare professionals, reaffirming the central role of the patient as the protagonist of the healthcare model and the need to preserve humanity in medicine.
